A tendency to aggression can increase the risk of stroke

Scientists came to the conclusion in the course of a study, that aggressive behavior doubles the risk of developing a stroke. A quick temper, impatience and aggression have the same effect on the state of the body likened to smoking.

Scientists managed to prove during one of the latest experiments that people with the "A” personality type are twice as likely to suffer from diseases affecting the cardiovascular system, as other personality types. This is especially true for a stroke. As shown by earlier studies for this type of personality- characterized by a tendency to compete (the desire to achieve the intended), impatience, irritability, and quick temper. To confirm the effect of aggressive behavior, scientists examined 150 patients aged 18 to 65 years with с stroke symptoms. The control group included 300 participants from the same region who did not have heart disease and did not have a hereditary predisposition to this type of pathology. All participants underwent psychological tests to determine the psychophysical state at the time of treatment. Scientists evaluated general well-being, quality of life and the presence of such symptoms as anxiety and depression. Behavioral models were evaluated on a scale of up to 35 points, where indicators from 24 and above were attributed to features typical of behavior "A". Scientists also took into account other factors, for example, the presence of chronic diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, bad habits, and high cholesterol. The full picture recreated data relating to age, sex, family environment, status, transferred stressful situations.

At the end of the study and follow-up phase, the middle age of participants was established, which was 53. 8 years for the group suffering from stroke and 53.6 years for the control group. The results of the survey showed that many of the patients who had suffered a stroke some time ago, was due to a stressful situation. The evaluation of this group of people revealed that stress doubles the risk of cardiovascular pathology several times. In addition, the same influence by the aggressive behavior of people influenced the development of heart diseases. The results showed that people who received the highest rating on the aggressiveness scale were 2 times more likely to have had a stroke. In addition, experts noted other factors independently associated with an increased risk of stroke. Those include the male gender, consumption of energy drinks more than 2 times a day, smoking, sleep disturbance, problems with the heart rhythm.

Thus, this study has shown that behavior and stressful situations can affect the functioning of the cardiovascular system and cause complications such as a stroke. Taking this factor into account, doctors will be able to identify people at risk and to prevent some cases of stroke.
