It is not safe to take painkillers after stroke

Researchers concluded that taking painkillers can provoke a second stroke or myocardial infarction.

The effect of various factors on the brain causes impaired cerebral circulation, which leads to the death of brain tissue due to a lack of adequate nutrition. The cells, in turn, do not receive the necessary nutrients in sufficient quantities and start dying. The external manifestation of a stroke can be different varying from a sudden weakness to impaired coordination and severe headache. With timely medical aid, the chances of recovery are high. However, the likelihood of complications, such as coma, paralysis, memory disorder is also high. As a result, experts recommend that you comply with bed rest and follow all the recommendations of a doctor when making this diagnosis.

In the course of one of the studies, the scientists noted another factor that could affect the development of complications after a stroke. The specialists came to the conclusion that taking painkillers can provoke a second stroke or myocardial infarction. However, this does not mean that you should completely abandon your medication. The specialists advise stroke patients to be careful when taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, narpoxen, celebrex. This applies not only to people who have recently experienced the disease, but also to other patients, since the likelihood of complications is also high after 5-8 years.

The number of those who participated in the experiment is more than 100,000 people over the age of 30. These patients had a heart attack at a different time period. The scientists have identified those participants who used painkillers on a regular basis after the diagnosis. After having carried out a number of diagnostic measures, the specialists found out that the risk of death among these patients was 59% higher in the first year, and 63% higher in the following five years, unlike patients who did not take NSAIDs. The risk of myocardial infarction or coronary heart disease was higher by 30% during the first year and by 41% over the next five years. According to scientists, the cause of such a harmful effect of NSAIDs lies in their toxicity affecting the kidneys, which in turn can affect the overall condition, as well as the formation of blood clots in the arteries. Scientists note that previously, people talked about the negative effect of these drugs on the cardiovascular system, but this study proves that the restrictions in nutrition, intake of drugs, physical activity should not stop after 1 year.

This study does not call for refusing painkillers, however, if possible, experts recommend a reduction on their intake to a minimum and to take them only if prescribed by the doctor. In addition, there are many other alternative methods of treatment and prevention, that can help you get rid of pain, for example, using physiotherapy.
