Intake of anti-thrombotic drugs in the first hours after stroke
Scientists determined that rehabilitation period after stroke goes by much faster and does not cause any serious complications in patients who took anti-thrombotic drugs.
Diseases of the cardiovascular system are the most common cause of death among people. A stroke takes the third position among cardiovascular pathologies. The stroke develops when there is a disruption of cerebral circulation, damage to the brain tissue and disorder of brain function. Such focal damages as motor dysfunction and aphasia can develop as a result of a stroke. It requires immediate first aid after the first symptoms were noticed to avoid serious complications.
In rare cases, the stroke does not manifest itself in any symptoms, and, unfortunately, many people develop serious complications. Currently, much attention is paid to rehabilitation after a stroke. A new study showed that patients who had stroke and who are taking antithrombotic drugs are more likely to successfully recover without developing serious complications.
The experiment involved 3000 participants who had symptoms of acute ischemic stroke, which they suffered from in the past. During this stroke, the main artery, which supplies blood to the brain, is blocked. The test medicine which contained the recombinant tissue plasminogen activator was administered intravenously. Out of 1,000 patients who received the new medicine, the number of people who had complete recovery increased by 80 people compared to the group that did not take any medications.
This medicine is able to prevent disability after a stroke and save lives. Nevertheless, there is a restriction in its administration. Scientists argue that treatment will be effective only if the drug is administered within 4 to 5 hours after the onset of the first stroke symptoms. Additionally, complications, including death, can still occur during the next seven days because of recurrent hemorrhage of the brain. However, without using this drug, statistics shows that one third of stroke cases will end up with a fatal outcome, and the other third will result in limited abilities, or disability. According to scientists, if the drug is absorbed by the body and does not cause side effects, there is a high chance of recovery.
Thus, if there is further successful testing of this medicine, many people who suffered from a stroke will be able to avoid the development of motor and other complications, as well as return to their normal lifestyle. During the following stage, scientists plan to research the causes of side effects in a more detailed way and develop measures to eliminate them.
