Mesencephalic modulation
Mesodiencephalic modulation is a therapeutic method which aims to correct the dysfunction of the human adaptive system. It is used during stroke rehabilitation course.
Currently it has been proven that the "quality of life" including body's resistance to internal and external damaging factors, person's mental status and his/her normal working capacity are directly depend on the the human adaptation system.
Mesodiencephalic modulation is one of the methods of transcranial electrotherapy. It neutralizes the destructive effect of stresses and improves adaptive (including immune) system of the human body by normalizing neuroendocrine centers of the brain.
Mesodiencephalic modulation has been used in medical practice for more than 15 years now. Number of patients who underwent one or several courses of this therapy exceeds 20,000 people. According to statistics, a positive change has been observed in 80-95% of patients. The only contraindication to this procedure are metal fragments in the brain.
The main advantages of MDM are its simplicity (the procedure is performed once a day, it takes only 30 minutes and its standard duration is 10 days), good tolerability by patients, non-invasiveness, and high therapeutic results. The technique allows to neutralize the negative side effects of stress response. It also speeds up the recovery of patients after stroke.
The basis of the technique is that a specially selected electrical signal is transferred through the pair of electrodes fixed on the forehead and the back of the head. This signal changes over time in accordance with a selected program. In the course of the procedure, a combination of DC and AC is used. The features of the signal change over time in the low-frequency range in contrast to other types of transcranial electrotherapy. Also, other features of the signal change in place of electrodes attachement - this greatly simplifies the procedure and increases the total amount of current that passes directly through the brain, not through the subcutaneous fatty tissues.
The strength of the current does not exceed 6 mA. When the signal passes through the brain, the minimal activity of the neurons of the cortex is detected.. The activity is also detected in other areas of the brain. There is also a significant change in the biochemical and electrical activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary and opioid systems, located in the mesencephalon and diencephalon areas. That`s why this method has got its name.
A comparison of MDM with electrospinaraxation and transcranial stimulation, has shown that mesodiencephalic modulation has a significant number of additional benefits that contribute to speeding up patient`s rehabilitation and achieving better results.
