Products rich in magnesium can prevent stroke

People whose daily diet includes a large number of foods rich in magnesium, such as green vegetables, nuts, beans, are less likely to develop a stroke.

A person can develop an acute disorder of cerebral circulation accompanied by damaged brain tissue and impaired brain functioning due to various factors. A medical term for such a disease is stroke. The factors affecting the occurrence of a stroke and many other neurological disorders include hypertension, heart diseases, smoking, alcohol abuse, and poor nutrition. The scientists have repeatedly mentioned the influence of proper nutrition and lifestyle on the health of the body in many studies. An unbalanced and unhealthy diet leads to an increased body weight, the development of a number of severe diseases, such as diabetes, and cardiovascular disorders.

When studying the effect of diet on the state of a healthy body in recent research, the scientists found that a daily intake of sufficient quantities of foods rich in magnesium, such as green vegetables, nuts, beans, will reduce the risk of stroke several times.. A special relationship between products rich in magnesium was noted for the ischemic stroke. Scientists noted that a daily intake of 100 milligrams of magnesium reduces the risk of ischemic stroke, (the most common form in the elderly) by 9%. The regular intake of foods rich in magnesium helps prevent any type of stroke. For example, every 100 milligrams of magnesium regularly produced by the body reduces the risk by 8%. The best natural sources of this element are whole grain products, green leafy vegetables, nuts, legumes (beans, peas, lentils), potatoes. Scientists estimated that one cup of beans or brown rice, three quarters of a cup of boiled spinach or one cup of prepared oat bran cereal contain about 100 milligrams of magnesium.

The importance of this element for the body is that it controls many processes in it. This bio-element has an positive effect on everything that happens in cells. The lack of magnesium in the body inhibits many vital processes. Previous studies indicate a relationship between the amount of magnesium in the body and the maintenance of normal blood pressure. In addition, magnesium helps regulate blood sugar levels by affecting the production of insulin. A sufficient amount of magnesium is also associated with low indicators of inflammatory processes, which are risk factors for the development of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Magnesium, which is involved in all processes of the body, is of great importance for the prevention of strokes.

The data for the experiment were obtained from the analysis of several studies, including information on the intake of magnesium in stroke cases, carried out from 1998 to 2011 in the US, Europe and Asia. Overall, scientists managed to study the results of the examination of more than 240,000 people. The participants aged 34 years and older were under observation for 8 to about 15 years. 6,500 people have suffered a stroke during this period. A survey of participants showed that the average daily dose of magnesium ranged from 242 milligrams to 471. In the US, the recommended dose of magnesium per day is 420 milligrams for men aged 31 years and older and 320 milligrams for women in the same age category. By summing up and comparing the findings with other possible factors (blood pressure, diabetes, age, bad habits, increased levels of cholesterol, degree of physical activity, lack of vitamins, genetic predisposition to cardiovascular diseases), scientists noted that the more magnesium rich products that were included in the diet of the participants, the lower the risk of developing a stroke.

This study once again emphasizes the influence of nutrition on the development and prevention of many diseases. The right choice of foods rich in vitamins and minerals will help reduce the risk of many diseases, including stroke. A person can prolong his/her life and avoid many ailments by including suchproducts as buckwheat, peas, spinach, nuts in his/her diet. However, to avoid side effects, for example, diarrhea, scientists recommend to consume not more than 350 milligrams of magnesium per day.
