Stroke affects more young people each year

Scientists of several medical institutions arrived at the decision that more than one-third of all strokes happen in people who are between the ages of 30 to 40 years old.

Stroke appears as a result of an acute dysfunction of cerebral circulation. The attack is worrisome because of the risk of lethal outcome or serious complications. It’s quite easy to recognize a stroke because its symptoms have a distinct character: numbness of facial muscles, legs, arms, or one of the body parts, incoherent speech, and impaired coordination. Prognosis depends on the extent of the lesion, but, what is important, is the speedy provision of medical care. As the statistics show, only 20% of all patients recover completely, but even these people have a high risk of a stroke recurrence in the next 5 years of their life.

Specialists have found that this disease is now affecting more and more longer people. Age frames moved from 50-60 years to 30-40 years old. Having analyzed statistics, scientists came to the conclusion, that one of the reasons that have lead to this phenomenon is a unhealthy or stressful lifestyle among the younger generation. Therefore, a stroke cannot be called a disease of the old generation as about one third of all the cases that are registered affect patients aged between 30 to 50 years old.

More than 119 researches around the globe during the period from 1990 to 2010 analyzed data that was collected. Clear selection criteria were established for the data accuracy. For instance, all the cases of chronic and hereditary pathologies were excluded. Besides, outcome of the disease, the percentage of the recovered patients, number of those who have received lifelong disability was also given consideration to.

Thorough examination of all the cases showed that the number of strokes have grown by 12% from 1990 to 2010. In 2010, there were around 5.9 million cases of primary strokes, 33 million cases of full recovery after the attack, 5.9 million cases of lethal outcomes and 102 million cases of disability after the stroke. More than 5.2 million of children and teenagers under 20 years old were also confronted with this dangerous illness. 62% of new cases, 45% of lethal outcomes and 71% of disabled patients are people under 50 years of age.

Although the death rate after the stroke decreased during last two decades, the number of new cases, especially among the younger generation, keeps growing. Wrong and sedentary lifestyle can serve as a main cause of such stroke "juvenation”. Scientists believe that these numbers can double in the future if no stroke preventive measures are applied. Better nutrition, physical exercise and regular check-up by the doctor will help people to significantly lower risk of early disability.
