Psychological support after a stroke
After suffering acute neurological diseases, the life of the patient and his family changes radically. At first, after a stroke, a person can lose control of basic physical functions and skills. Patients develop their own survival strategies, for example, correlation, distancing, self-control, escape, evasion or rejection.
The patients are made fully aware on the causes of the diseases and measures to avoid a second stroke. When undertaking various treatments (physiotherapy), the patients are shown exercises, which they can later do on their own. Thus, the results of treatment are accelerated and the patient’s general condition gets better. The patient’s loved ones can also help in the rehabilitation process. For example, the patient’s relative can show and do physiotherapy or speech therapy exercises together with him/her. To avoid overloading or demotivation, care should be taken that the patient or family members do not expect quick results.
To restore a normal emotional state, one can arrange meetings with other stroke survivors. If this is not enough, the patient is recommended to have individual therapeutic consultations with a psychologist. If necessary, family members can also join. Recommendations, advice, support from the patient’s relatives is an important part of the rehabilitation period after a stroke. There are special mutual assistance groups created in order to ensure that the patients, members of their families have the opportunity to communicate, solve social, medical and other problems.
