Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is one of the essential therapeutic measures in neurorehabilitation. It can be used for rehabilitation of patients after a stroke, spinal injuries, etc.

Before performing the exercises suggested by physiotherapist, the specialists choose an optimal complex, which will fully meet the patient’s needs. When the patient chooses the exercises on their own, they are often not suitable for the rehabilitation therapy. Therefore, the specialists of the rehabilitation center take full responsibility for this choice. As a rule, as soon as the patient progressesin physiotherapy, smooth transition from simple exercises to more complex ones takes place.

General recommendations

It should be noted that physiotherapy should not be associated with pain, especially when the increase of intensity. The first training can cause mild pain, but it should weaken over time and subsequently completely disappear.

Before starting the complex of exercises, it is strongly recommended to warm up the body parts.For this purpose, one can use hot baths, shower, a heating pad or a heated towel. This procedure is not mandatory, but in most cases it reduces muscle stiffness and pain.

One should be very careful when startingexercises and avoid significant effort and sweeping movements. The set of amplitude and dynamics of movements should occur gradually. The important point is a constant monitoring of the course of classes, which is necessary to avoid fatigue.

The daily execution of a set of therapeutic exercises should become the patient’s habit. The execution of these exercises at the same time and in the same place significantly contributes to the success of classes. The duration of the training usually varies from 10 to 15 minutes. It should be noted that the effect of the classes is not instantaneous and directly depends on the thoroughness and regularity of the exercises.

Examples of exercises

To restorethe function of the cervical spine

  • The patient is sitting on a chair or standing, while his hands are lowered along the trunk. The head is rotating as much as possible to the right and left. The number of repetitions varies from 5 to 10. This exercise aims to achieve such a degree of mobility of the vertebrae, in which, at the time of maximum rotation, the nose and chin will be located just above the shoulder;
  • The starting position is the same as in the previous case. Oneshould lower head trying to press the chin to the chest (if possible). The exercise aims to increase the flexibility of the cervical spine and to remove the stiffness of the major muscles of the posterior region of the neck. The number of repetitions varies from 5 to 10 times;
  • The starting position is the same. The patient needs to move the head back with the simultaneous retraction of the chin. The number of repetitions is 5-10 times. This exercise aims to correct posture. This exercise is recommended not only within the set of exercises, but also during the day.

To restore the function of the muscles of the neck and back

  • The patient is in sited position with one hand on the forehead. You should tiltyour head forward simultaneously pressing your palm against your forehead - in opposition to the movement of the head - for 10 seconds. The number of repetitions is 10. An interval between repetitions is 10 seconds. The exercise aims to strengthen the muscles of the anterior region of the neck, improve mobility of the cervical vertebrae and ensure the correct position of the head;
  • The patient is sitting with one palm on the head in the area of the temple. The essence of the exercise is similar to the previous one, but the head should be tilted to the side. The purpose is to strengthen the lateral muscles of the neck and improve mobility of the vertebrae;
  • The patient is either sitting or standing with the hands lowered along the body. It is necessary to maximally raise the shoulders and hold them for 10 seconds, then relax and take a deep breath. 10-15 seconds later one should repeat the exercise. The total number of repetitions is 5-10 times;
  • The patient is either sitting or lying on the floor. It is necessary to massage the area located between the occipital bone and its soft part where the muscles are located (either on your own or with someone’s help). The exposure should last 3-4 minutes and be strong enough. This massage can cause pain, which in a short time will weaken. The procedure helps with headaches;
  • The patient is either sitting or lying on the floor. It is necessary to rub with your fingertips or massage the upper and inner zone of the scapula, which is the area of attachment of the powerful neck muscle that lifts the scapula. At first, the procedure causes pain, which soon disappears. In the area of the shoulder girdle, one can have a feeling of warmth. The duration of this massage is 3-4 minutes.
